The folk dance and music group OTTOSET was founded in 1982. Since, it has firmly put the small village of Kaustinen into the map of the world. OTTOSET is considered to be a strong entity of unique style, disciplined folk dancing and outstanding folk music. There are three main principles that make OTTOSET one of a kind: respecting the tradition, diversity and continuity of the activities and the "merciless" sense of humour.

OTTOSET has always been proud of its roots. It really shows. The local folk tradition is like an endless cornucopia. You can hear the strong influence of Kaustinen’s traditional folk music in the music groups emotional playing. Being a part of the Kaustinen Youth Association has also a great value. It gives the young people a sense of belonging. To belong in something that has existed before their time and will exist after. Kaustinen Youth Association has also four other folk dance groups. Häkkyrät (15-18 yrs.), Multrut (12-15 yrs.), Olemattomat (8-11 yrs.) Puukstavit (8-12yrs) ja Pyltryt (4-7 yrs.). It goes without saying that each one of these groups has also a separate music group. All the directors are always members in an older group. To guarantee the future lots of these youngsters have participated in director training.

OTTOSET consists of talented young people, aged between 18-26 yrs. Their strong urge to self-expression and inherited musical gifts have made it possible to combine different kinds of musical, theatrical and dancing acts. For examble, the folk musical "Henrik" and many theatrical choreographies by the director Jarkko Peltola. Also the songs composed and arranged by Ville Ojanen are taking the music group nearer and nearer the international top. The music group shows in their latest CD "Ookoolypsykone" some superb maturity to interpret different emotions.

To keep the local tradition and culture vital, they must go hand in hand with the time. OTTOSET, with their director Jarkko Peltola, have always tried to bring out new choreographies based on the old tradition. Their skilfulness never stops surprising you. However, it demands a professional attitude and the will to develope as a performer. And during the last three summers they really have been working full days as a professionals of folk dance and music. The appearances all around Finland, and international festivals as well, have truly improved their visibility.

Visits in foreign countries: An essential part of OTTOSET performances and togetherness is the penetrating and "merciless" sense of humour. A sort of humour that leaves no-one cold. They take the dance and music seriously joking.
